Getting it licence: Smilin' Moose deck and patio open at last - Hudson Star Observer

“But Barb and Larry like to do things extremely meticulously,” explained owner Tom Tomaro, speaking of his wife and Larry Paul, the general contractor. “Get it right, then get it open, is how we looked at it,” Tomaro said. “Closely,” agreed Paul. It would be hard to deny that the restaurant owners and contractor got it right. The deck with table seating for 56 extends off the back of the chief restaurant, providing an excellent vantage point from which to view the St. Croix River and the colorful bluff rising above the downtown. The patio undeserving of the deck has bar seating for 24, plus tables for 40 and booths next to the sidewalk with room for 20. Sparing no expense. The Tamaros and mate Mike Tupa spared no expense in the construction. The three-inch thick and 12-inch wide cedar planks for the decking were trucked in from Washington shape. The patio bar and booths are made of thick white pine. Manufactured stone mimicking a limestone wall separates the patio from the business to the north. Paul and his party dismantled an old barn to acquire the boards needed to replicate a weathered boathouse. “We used such unique material it was really fatiguing to source. You couldn’t get it at Menards or Home Depot,” Tom Tomaro related. Waiting for materials to arrive was biggest cause of construction delays, Tomaro and Paul said. The creator. Barb Tomaro did the designing -- as she did for the main restaurant and bar that opened in March 2014. It’s in the renovated Second Street construction that for many years was Bob Smith’s Sports Club. The décor for the main restaurant has a rustic lodge theme. Barb wanted to conclude that “up north” feeling outside for the deck and patio. The deck imitates a pier with café tables and white umbrellas overlooking the bottled water. “I think it’s got a great view of the riverfront and the lower part of town,” Tom Tomaro said. “People really love it. ”. The patio is the irrigate’s edge. The bar is a Huck Finn river raft. The custom-designed, colored-and-polished concrete floor has a blue dazzle that in sunshine looks like water. A gas campfire is nestled into the limestone wall, next to live tamarack, jack pine, silver pine and spruce trees. USB ports for recharging cell phones line the bar and each booth. The bar also has hooks for hanging purses. Barb Tomaro said the concept was to create different scenes throughout the restaurant “so every time you come you get a little something new. “It’s a big space and we try to pack a lot in,” she said. She and Tom enjoy antiques and shopped together for profuse of those that decorate the restaurant. “I think she really pulled it off,” Tom said of Barb’s design for the deck and patio. Barb has a degree in human resources from St. Thomas University, but no formal training in heart design. She drew sketches of her ideas and brought them to Paul and her husband to figure out how to do the construction. The designs come “straight out of her head,” Tom said. “She dreams it up, draws it out, and then we have to go win the materials. It’s not like we find the materials and then she comes up with the idea. The stylized arrow motifs throughout the restaurant, deck and patio were fashioned from trees the Tomaros cut. The birch bark on the bar in the downstairs Badger’s Hollow meeting room is from trees in their back yard. Barb said that Paul would often tell her, “Barb, I’ve never done this.
